IFATS in the Press and on the internetFlight International - 18/12/06Following the IFATS Workshop held in Braunshweig, Germany at DLR facilities, an article has been published in Flight International.
The title is "European Commission's IFATS team unveils unmanned vision of air transport" El avion del futuro volara sin piloto, JM Noticias (27-12-2006)This article has been published on a spanish speaking website, following the article in Flight International
Asia Pacific Aviation News, 2005An article has been published with title "Airliners without pilots - new study"
"... A study has been launched into the feasibility of building and operating large commercial aircraft that do not need pilots. The study is being conducted by the European Union and is known as the Innovative Future Air System..." Cruise-Chat.com, 2005 chat with subject "Study into pilot-free airliners" has been started on January 2005 on this website.
Flight International - July 2004EU Lunches pilotless airliner study
An article p. 46 in the "research" section of the 20-26 July 2004 issue reports the official start of IFATS Project. EurocontrolEUROCONTROL is the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. This civil and military Organisation which currently numbers 33 Member States, has as its primary objective the development of a seamless, pan-European Air Traffic Management (ATM) system.
EUROCONTROL develops, coordinates and plans for implementation of short-, medium- and long-term pan-European air traffic management strategies and their associated action plans in a collective effort involving national authorities, air navigation service providers, civil and military airspace users, airports, industry, professional organisations and relevant European institutions. News releases related to Automated ATS and 4DAviation Week and Space technologyAn article of November the 7th 2005 is relating the work of a team based in Sweden about 4D trajectories as an approach used to boost runway capacity by 30%.
Aviation Week, January 2006The U.S. Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) is defining a new concept of operations and systems architecture for air traffic control and will push for government and industry acceptance over the next two years.
Related projects (EU funded, and more)Tube Advanced Lane Control (TALC)This project develops the notion of Tube Airspace Model as a scenario for air trafic management and control.
The design of the tube airspace between two points starts with the specification of an ideal trajectory taking into account airline preferences (flight prioritisation) and airport constraints (resources). NGATS Institute (USA)The NGATS Institute was established in March 2005 via an Other Transactions Agreement between the National Center for Advanced Technologies (NCAT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) "as the mechanism through which the JPDO will access world-class private sector expertise, tools, and facilities for application to NGATS activities and tasks." Professional, technical and consulting services from a broad spectrum of industry will be provided through the NGATS Institute "as requested by the JPDO leadership in support of planning, research, analysis, assessment, architecture, functional requirements setting, prototyping, simulation, and demonstrating future system attributes."
UAVNETUAVNET is a thematic network funded by the European Community to advance the development of UAVs (Ummanned Air Vehicles) for civilian purposes.
UAVs have proven their capability within the military fields. There are many civilian applications in environmental monitoring, communications relays, law enforcement surveillance, earth observation, etc. where the benefits of UAVs are only beginning to be understood. The thematic network will serve as a forum for information exchange, for suggesting new policies and for launching activities in critical technology research. MAVDEM - Mini Aerial Vehicle DEMonstratorMAVDEM is a European project funded by the WEAG
The objective of this programme is to study, design and test a robust concept of a small air vehicle with high performance (stationary flight and economic fast cruise capabilities), reliable, easy to operate and affordable (integration of COTS components as much as possible). MAVDEM is coordinated by ONERA (France). Other parners are Oto Melara S.p.A (Italy), Sener SA (Spain), Tell Mie AS (Norway), Alcore Technologies (France) and Celin Avio (Italy). SAFEE - Security of Aircraft in the Future European EnvironmentThe SAFEE IP is a large integrated project designed to restore full confidence in the air transport industry. The overall vision for SAFEE is the construction of an advanced aircraft security system designed to prevent on-board threats. The main goal of this system is to ensure a fully secure flight from departure to arrival destination whatever the identified threats are.The project’s baseline is the assumption that upstream identification control and airport specific security measures have all been completed The project is focussed on the implementation of a wide spectrum of threat sensing systems, and the corresponding response actions against physical person(s) or electronic intruders.
The proponents are major European industrial actors of the Aeronautical sector associated with a high level research centre, several relevant SMEs and some specialised universities. A certain degree of confidentiality on proposed sensors and technologies will be, for obvious reasons, imposed on the obtained results. One of the key aspects of the project is an integrated information management system underpinned by a secure communication systemFor reaching these objectives SAFEE has 5 key activities (Sub-Projects): Related Conferences and WorkshopsACA'2007, June 25-29, 2007, Toulouse, France17th IFAC Symposium on Automatic Control in Aerospace
Aeronautics Days 2006, Vienna, 19-21 of June 2006The Fifth Community Aeronautics Days is a key event for European research and technology in aeronautics and air transport
ICAS 2006 - 3-8 of September 2006, Hamburg (Germany)ICAS 2006 is a a congress of International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences
